BRIDGEWATER, Mass. —
A candlelight vigil was held in Bridgewater Saturday night to mark the one-year anniversary of the lockdown of long-term care facilities, including nursing homes, in Massachusetts.
The vigil honored the lives of the long-term care residents who died of COVID-19, as well as those who survived the coronavirus pandemic.
Melinda Gribko-Reyes, a local social worker, organized the event on Bridgewater’s Central Square.
“For the first time, we all feel hope,” Gribko-Reyes said. “Last week, I saw families hugging each other for the very first time in a year. There was not a dry eye in the house. It was so incredibly moving to see that.”
U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, who represents the 8th congressional district of Massachusetts, attended the vigil and spoke during the event.
The lighting of candles was followed by a moment of silence and prayer.
