U.S. Sen. Edward Markey of Massachusetts defeated U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III in Tuesday’s hard-fought Democratic primary, harnessing support from progressive leaders to overcome a challenge from a younger rival who is a member of America’s most famous political family. Kennedy called Markey to concede the Democratic nomination.
Markey now faces a general contest where he is considered a strong favorite in a state that has historically elected Democrats.
He’ll face the winner of the Republican primary, Kevin O’Connor, in November.
Incumbent Rep. Richard Neal, the powerful chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, held off Democratic challenger Alex Morse in the Democratic primary for the 1st Congressional District. The race was marked by allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with students by Morse when he was an adjunct professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Neal will run unopposed in the November general election after Republicans failed to field a candidate.
Democrat Rep. Seth Moulton, a Marine Corps veteran who saw combat in Iraq and mounted a brief campaign for president last year held off two challengers in the 6th District race and Rep. Stephen Lynch trounced his challenger in the 8th District.
The tightest race of the night was among the Democrats in the 4th Congressional District, which was vacated by Kennedy.
