NORWOOD, MA – Congressman Stephen Lynch brought an international focus to Norwood’s Special Town Meeting Monday night, announcing that he will be traveling to Poland, Belarus and Moldova as the leader of a seven-person congressional delegation to assess what can be done for the Ukrainian refugees there.

“Last week the most important bill on the floor of the House was the Ukraine support legislation,” he said. “Congress – House and Senate – voted to support about $13.2 billion for the Ukraine government for humanitarian aid but also for military supplies that will allow Ukrainians to defend themselves on the ground of Ukraine.”

He added that this fulfills the United States obligation under NATO to defend NATO countries with tanks and anti-missile systems while not offering American troops to be stationed there.

“This was a clearly unprovoked attack on a civilian population,” he stressed.

On Friday, Lynch said he will be leading a delegation traveling to Poland, Moldova and Romania to assess what can be done to assist Ukrainian refugees there.

“The interesting thing about this situation is that there are no refugee camps in Poland, Moldova or in Romania,” he explained, noting that he had encountered them in his previous travels to the Middle East. “Every single refugee is being housed in private housing by the people of those countries. But with 2 million refugees, there’s only so much individual families can do.

“I try every day to live up to your highest expectations,” he continued, “and I appreciate that you are here tonightat the core of our democracy. This is what the people of Ukraine are fighting for. They want the right to do what you are doing here tonight – to make decisions on your own for your own town, to elect your own leaders.”
